Camera Lesson continued

Following the last camera lesson, we then had a lesson where we learnt how to use them in a real media situation. We were split into groups of 4, my group being Luella, India, Fernando and myself, and we worked with a Canon EOS 5D to create a mini sequence where something small would happen and we would take different shots to convey the continuity of the situation. We attempted two different sequences.

First, I was the actress, Fernando was the cameraman, India was the director and Luella was the co-director. The sequence was me tying my hair up the same way each time whilst looking slightly to the side of the camera. We used roughly 4 different shot. The first was an establishing shot of the scene and what was happening. We then did a close up on my hands when I was taking the hairband off and then Fernando moved the camera to my face. Another shot was a super close up on the tying of my hair where the camera was solely focused on just my hair. The last shot was a medium close up on my upper body and face to make clear who I was as an actor to further illustrate who the character is.

The second sequence was made up of me being the director, India the filmmaker, Fernando the co-director and Luella the actress. The scene consisted of Luella walking into the camera, staring right at the camera, winking, flicking her hair and then walking off. First we did an establishing shot to set the scene for the audience. Then we did a close up on her face to show the winking. Then we did a close up on her hair to show the flicking. Then finally we did a medium close up from a side angle, however making sure not to break the 180 degree rule, of her looking where the camera would have been. This was to show diversity and keep the audience interested. During this lesson we learnt how to play different simple roles within the filmmaking process which allowed us to get more familiar with the course and more comfortable with it. It was very useful personally as I was able to get more familiar with the Canon which was important as it is a very common camera in the industry.
